Gutsy Legacy Of The Peranakan

It has been more than 30 years since I last ate this stuff.

The Peranakan culture would be incomplete without its gutsy legacy – which is an iconic dish called  the Perut Ikan.   The characterizing ingredient is fish guts, preserved in salt.   Cooked in a slightly spicy soup, with a mixture of various kinds of vegetables – I won’t name them here, as plenty of recipes can be found online – it is ecstatically delicious.

In those days, my mum travelled all the way from Butterworth to Chowrasta Market, Penang, just to get all the ingredients.

No self-proclaiming descendant of a Peranakan can be deemed authentic until and unless he/she has savored this delicacy and declared it yummy.     Maybe this truth is hard to stomach for some, but it is that fishy !
