Back in the old days, wages were low and employment opportunities were scarce. Odd jobs like grass-trimming were up for grabs. But it was hard labor for the workers doing their assignments in the hot sun using a sickle or scythette with a long handle, and swinging the tool in a somewhat tilted elliptical orbit that went past their heads and down onto the grass below.
It could be dangerous too, especially for other team members or any unsuspecting passers-by, who could end up having some toes, or a foot or worse a head flying off in the air. Woes were the days !
Of course, in modern times, grass-trimming and cutting have largely been mechanized, thanks to lawn mowers, electric-cutters, and small portable engine-powered trimmers.
