The Bloodhound surface-to-air missiles of No.33 Squadron of RAF at Butterworth airbase. Wonder who remembers seeing these ? They were deployed there from 1965 to 1969.
One of the hazards of staying near the airbase in early childhood was that one started to develop an airhead quite early in life. Using paper rolls and cardboard, I did make some models of these in those days.
The missiles deployed were of the MK2 version. Each was powered by two Thor ramjet engines and four Gosling booster rockets, and reached a maximum speed of Mach 2.7
By the late 1960s, the British had run out of resources and interests to maintain the Bloodhounds, and so the latter were dismantled.
