NOKIA — Finnish And Finished

In the spring of 2001, I was assigned by my American-owned company to its LCD display factory in Shenzhen, China.

Surprise, surprise! All the managers there – both local PRC’s and expats – had mobile cellphones.  And the hot favourite was the newly-released model 3310 made by NOKIA of Finland.

To connect with the people (as advocated by Nokia, LOLX) I wasted no time in acquiring one, which came with a transparent waist pouch, that could be worn on my belt.

But before long, many other brands, both local and foreign (Motorola, Ericsson, Samsung, etc) had sprung up to challenge Nokia.  Unfortunately for Nokia, being embroiled in many internal upheavals, it rapidly lost its market share.

By 2007, the writing was on the screen – Apple had just introduced the iPhone and that was instrumental in finishing off the Finnish company.
